Playmaker X Alternatives
Most coaches searching for Playmaker X alternatives are not stuck on how to draw a play. They are stuck on the two hundred plays already sitting in the app they have. Football Playbook is being built to remove exactly that cost: upload the playbook PDF you already have, see it rebuilt as editable, animated plays, and decide from there.

The hard part of switching isn't the software
It's the plays you already have.
Learning a new play editor takes an evening. Redrawing a season's worth of plays takes weeks you do not have in August, which is why coaches stay on tools they have already outgrown. That is a migration problem, not a features problem.
So the importer is the first thing we built for coaches arriving from another app. You export the playbook you already have as a PDF, upload it, and each diagram is rebuilt as a real Football Playbook play — players, routes, blocking and ball actions — that you can then edit and animate like anything you drew here.
We are deliberate about what that does and does not mean. It works with digital playbook PDFs exported or printed from software. Reconstruction is not perfect, and you review every play against the original page before saving it. Handwritten, scanned or photographed playbooks are not supported yet.

Export your existing playbook
From Playmaker X, or any app you already use, export or print your plays to a PDF. One file, up to 60 pages during the beta.

Upload the PDF
Drop the file on the import page. Your playbook stays private — it is never published, shared or shown to other coaches.

Review the reconstructed plays
Each rebuilt play is shown next to the original diagram it came from. Anything the reconstruction is unsure about is labelled so you can check it rather than trust it.

Save them into Football Playbook
Create an account or sign in to keep the plays. From there they are ordinary plays: editable, animatable, printable, shareable.

Who should stay with Playmaker X?
There are real cases where switching is the wrong call.
You need a native Android app
Playmaker X publishes Android apps. Football Playbook runs in any mobile browser and ships an iOS app, but there is no Android app today.
Your staff already knows it cold
If your coaches are fast in a tool mid-season, changing platforms in week four costs more than it returns. Import in the offseason instead.
Your playbook only exists on paper
Hand-drawn and scanned playbooks aren't supported by the importer yet, so you'd be redrawing either way — and then the switch is purely a feature decision.
Switching questions coaches actually ask
- What is the best alternative to Playmaker X?
- It depends on what you are trying to fix. If you want a drawing and animation app on your phone, Playmaker X does that and coaches use it happily. Football Playbook is the better fit if you want flag and tackle in one place, a read-only sideline Game Mode, wristband printing, private links for players and parents, and a way to bring the plays you already drew somewhere else instead of redrawing them.
- Can I move my Playmaker X plays to another app?
- There is no direct play-file transfer between football playbook apps. What you can move is a PDF: export or print your playbook, then import that PDF into Football Playbook, where each diagram is rebuilt as an editable play. It is not a perfect one-to-one copy of every drawing, which is why you review each play against the original before saving.
- Can Football Playbook import a Playmaker X PDF?
- It can import digital playbook PDFs — files exported or printed straight from software, where the diagrams are crisp rather than a photo of paper. A Playmaker X export is that kind of file. Handwritten, scanned and photographed playbooks are not supported yet, and we would rather say so than take your upload and hand back guesses.
- Will imported plays still be editable?
- Yes. An imported play is a normal Football Playbook play — you can drag players, reshape routes, change formats, add blocking or ball actions, animate it, print it and share it. Nothing about it is locked or read-only because it arrived by import.
- Does Football Playbook support flag and tackle football?
- Both, in the same account: 5v5, 6v6, 7v7, 8v8, 9v9, 11v11 and 12v12, with flag or tackle rules chosen in the editor. Coaches who run a flag team in spring and a tackle team in fall do not need two products.
- Can I share a playbook with players and parents?
- Yes. A private link gives a read-only version of the playbook — every play animates, nothing can be edited, no account is needed on their end, and you can switch the link off whenever you want.
- Can I print my playbook or wristbands?
- Yes. Playbooks and play sheets export to PDF, and wristband sheets and multi-panel booklets print with an optional play-list cover.
- Do I need an account to preview an imported playbook?
- No. You can upload a PDF and see every reconstructed play next to its original without signing up. An account is only needed at the point where you want to keep the plays.
